Under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, the Department of Public Works has been playing a leading role in the official construction world of Bangladesh for almost two hundred years. There are well-organized engineers and technical manpower in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, trained and experienced in the public works department. The public works department is still shining in its self-glory. There are offices of Public Engineer's Executive Engineers and Sub-Divisional Engineers in every district throughout Bangladesh.

Since the establishment of Sherpur Public Works Department in 1990, construction and maintenance of important government establishment in the district has been carried out through this department. Earlier it was a sub-division office under Jamalpur PWD Division and more even earlier it was a sub-division under Mymensingh PWD Division. At present there are two sub-divisional engineer's offices named Sherpur Public Works Sub-Division (Civil) and Sherpur Public Works Sub-Division (Electric) under this divisional office. The Office of the Sub-Divisional Engineer plays a leading role in maintaining the quality of work at the field level and performing the work on time as per the schedule.
